Economy
The focus of this task is to demonstrate the ways in which industrialization changed daily life and society of many people in the United States. Your newspaper should examine and cover the following topics:
- the type of work and working conditions in factories for workers, including child labor and women
- the living condition of people in terms of housing, food, clothing, life expectancy
- the changing role of blacks and regional shifts (moving from the south to the north) during the Industrial Revolution
- the role and lives of immigrants coming into the United States
- the impact of the growth of cities and urbanization on health, sanitation, and the economy
Elements of this Section
- 1 news story on any of the above above topics (100-350 words each). AT LEAST 1 primary and 1 secondary source.
- 1 news story on any two inventions from this period (100-350 words). Provide an overview of the major inventions and a commentary on the importance of the invention. AT LEAST 1 primary and 1 secondary source.
- 2 Letters to the Editor (150-300 words for each letter). One letter must be strongly opposed to child labor, one letter must be strongly supportive of child labor. You must use at least 1 primary source and 1 secondary source for each of the letters. You should be using AT LEAST three different sources total.
- At least one image with a caption that relates to your topic.
- 1 Advertisement that would have been used during this time period (your original creation).
- 1 Political Cartoon (original creation)
- 1 Editorial: (150-300 words) You must pick a side and answer the following question: Ultimately, did the Industrial Revolution contribute positively or negatively to society? You must use AT LEAST 1 primary source and 2 secondary sources as evidence. Make sure that you analyze the evidence to show how it proves your thesis.
Citations
All sources must be cited in text. If you are unclear how to do this, please go back to the home page and re-watch the powerpoint. In addition to the in text citations, you should have a works cited page at the bottom of your tasks page. (Essentially, each student should have their own works cited page)
