Political Reform and the Progressive Era
For this part of your assignment, your journalism team will be exploring the political reforms and social movements that brought about the Progressive Era in American Politics. Your newspaper should focus on the topics and essential questions below:
- How did reformers try to end government corruption and limit the influence of big business?
- How did women gain new rights and opportunities?
- How did journalists contribute to reform efforts?
- Describe President Roosevelt's Square Deal Plan.
- How did minority groups struggle against discrimination and work for political reform?
Elements of this Section
- Write TWO (150-300 word) news articles on any of the following topics:
- What started progressivism (for example: Muckrackers, Unions). AT LEAST 1 primary and 1 secondary source.
- Women's rights (suffrage, birth control, the "new woman"). AT LEAST 1 primary and 1 secondary source.
- Teddy Roosevelt's "Square Deal". AT LEAST 1 primary and 1 secondary source.
- How did minority groups struggle against discrimination and work for political reform? AT LEAST 1 primary and 1 secondary source.
- 2 Letters to the Editor (150-300 words for each letter). One letter must be strongly opposed to progressive reforms, one letter must be strongly supportive of progressive reforms. You must use at least 1 primary source and 1 secondary source for each of the letters. You should be using AT LEAST three different sources total.
- At least one image with a caption that relates to your topic.
- 1 Advertisement that would have been used during this time period (your original creation).
- 1 Political Cartoon (original creation)
- 1 Editorial: (150-300 words) You must pick a side and answer the following question: Ultimately, what progressive reform do you think had the most impact on America and why? You must use AT LEAST 1 primary source and 2 secondary sources as evidence. Make sure that you analyze the evidence to show how it proves your thesis.
Citations
All sources must be cited in text. If you are unclear how to do this, please go back to the home page and re-watch the powerpoint. In addition to the in text citations, you should have a works cited page at the bottom of your tasks page. (Essentially, each student should have their own works cited page)
